Dear [merge My Profile:Name],

The spotlight has been on charity trusteeship recently with the release of the New Philanthropy Capital report, Board Matters (more information on the report below). NCVO strongly supports the idea that improving governance is a priority for the sector.

This briefing will signpost you to the latest tools and information from our work, and the work of others, to support and strengthen governance and leadership across the sector.

We always like to know what you think of the briefing, so please email your comments to governanceandleadership@ncvo-vol.org.uk.

Best wishes,

Anne Moynihan
Head of Governance and Leadership

New Philanthropy Capital Board Matters Report

NPC’s recent report, Board Matters, is a review of charity trusteeship in the UK. It questions the strength of trustee boards in the charity sector, and argues that recruitment, training and induction of board members is frequently neglected because charities and funders do not prioritise governance. It also highlights the need for boards to evaluate their performance and suggests a number of improvements that could help to strengthen trusteeship.

Compact Successes

Compact Voice has put together a quick 2-page showcase of Compact successes.  ‘Compact Success Stories’ demonstrates how the Compact has made a practical difference to the sector and how it can have a positive impact on your organisation.  Ensuring three-year contracts, avoiding funding cuts and circumventing conflicts are just a few of the examples outlined.

Real Help for Communities: Modernisation Fund

Funded by the Office for the Third Sector, the £16.5 million Modernisation Fund will help third sector organisations be more resilient to the impact of the economic downturn. A mix of grant and loan funding is available to organisations that are providing services to those worst hit by the recession. The funding is targeted at helping these organisations overcome barriers to collaboration and merger, or take other steps to adapt to the recession.

CIO Regulations - Latest Developments

The Office of the Third Sector will publish a summary of the consultation responses and a timetable for the introduction of Charitable Incorporated Organisations (CIOs) in the next few weeks. It has been suggested that Government intends to revise the rules on CIOs, making them less reliant on company law and cutting the administrative burden. This will mean a delay in the introduction of CIOs at least until April 2010.

An updated implementation plan of the Charities Act 2006
was published in April 2009.
